Notes about this week and beyond

1.       Please note the grades/times that students will be impacted by activities below.

●        March 30: Language Arts State Testing Practice  -- what grade level(s) will test and what periods? This is for the juniors and it will be during their regular scheduled English class.

●        March 30: Link Spring Egg Hunt – Advisory – is this for the whole student body or just freshmen? It’s for all freshmen and their Junior/Senior Link Leaders.

2.       Please let your juniors know about the College and & Careers 101 Night next Wednesday, April 6, for students and parents. It’s from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. I’ll leave some flyers in the office, and they’re also posted around school.

Our very own Gretchen from ASPIRE “Central” will be doing the presentation. You are most welcome to come, too!!

4.       It will soon be April  -- like Friday already!! Which means you can have seniors start doing the ASPIRE exit surveys. I have a shortcut to the survey on the desktop of each computer.

6.       In case you haven’t yet heard: The recipient of the Birl Shultz Memorial Scholarship for four years tuition at Willamette University is Hayden Cline, one of our student aides.
7.       Tuesday April 5 from 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., reps from eight of Oregon’s public universities will be on hand at Western Oregon University. Students (and any mentors who would like to attend) will be able to talk with these folks as well as take a tour of the WOU campus. Call 503-838-8194 for details. 2016 Greenfield Peace Writing Scholarship

  Attached below are copies of the Greenfield Peace Writing Scholarship flyer, as well as a direct link the Oregon PSR page. There are a total of three scholarships available to the Juniors and Seniors in the State of Oregon. The deadline to submit is March 14, so still a few weeks for students to submit a 600 word essay, if interested. Would love to see a winner from your school! ​​​​

Find Over 1300 Scholarships with April or Later Deadlines in CIS

Log into CIS and go to Education > Financial Aid Sort > Go:

Under the “Deadline” criteria on the left-hand menu, choose “April or later,” then use other criteria to further specify your search. For example, under “Personal Characteristics” scroll to the bottom and choose your county and “All residents of Oregon.” Or specify financial need under the “Financial Need” criteria.

The OSAC scholarship application deadline has passed, but your students can still find scholarships in Oregon CIS. We list more than 1300 scholarships with an April or later deadline, over 400 of which are Oregon-specific. Use Financial Aid Sort in CIS to help students find scholarships:

How are you paying for college? Scholarships are the best way to get FREE money.

 

In today’s world, when you hear the word free, it usually is too good to be true, but that is just what scholarships are – free money to use for your education after high school. Different than student loans, scholarships do not have to be repaid. Generally, scholarships are awarded based on criteria established by the donor.

 

Not convinced? Here are a few things scholarships can do for you:

• Help pay your college expenses including tuition and fees, room and board, books, and supplies
• Reduce your need to take on student loan debt and the amount of money you owe after graduation
• Honor your achievements by awarding you for a job-well-done

 

So how do you apply? There are thousands of types of scholarships available to students from all walks of life. Scholarships can be based on GPA, extracurricular interest, career interest, family background, ethnicity, geography, financial need, or type of schooling, just to name a few. Navigating and determining what scholarships are right for you can be challenging.

 

Your ASPIRE mentor will help you work smarter, not harder, throughout the application process by working with you through an activities list to stay on track with deadlines and helping you with essay review.

 

One place to start is by filling out the Oregon Student Access Commission (OSAC) scholarship application online, which has more than 450 scholarships in one application! OSAC awards more than $15 million in scholarships annually. Scholarship and award amounts range from $500 to $10,000 or more.

 

Log on to www.OregonStudentAid.gov to start applying today! Your ASPIRE mentor will help answer any questions you have about the application.
