FAFSA Work Session during Advisory on Jananuary 19th

​The aim of this activity is have as many seniors as possible complete the FAFSA with help from mentors, a college financial aid expert or two, counselors and Advisory teachers. 

Many students have never filled out an application of any kind, and there are so many little things that can trip them up. The rationale is that immediate help with the rough spots will get them to the goal of submitting a complete and accurate FAFSA -- or at least having the Student part done -- before the end of January.           

Parents are welcome to come to the Work Session.

Kaiser Permanente Scholarship Application Deadline - Jan. 13, 2016

Hello, I hope that you had a wonderful holiday break and safely enjoyed the winter weather. This is a reminder that the deadline for the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Scholarship application is next week (January 13). Key details are below. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 5 p.m. PST TEACHER/COUNSELOR NOMINATION DEADLINE: Monday, January 11, 2016, 5 p.m. PST APPLICATION: Applicants can click here for the application website or visit the following page: kp.org/communitybenefit/scholarship/nw MORE ABOUT THE NOMINATION PROCESS: Applicants must find a teacher or counselor to nominate them and enter the teacher or counselor’s email address into the online application. The nominator will then receive an email with instructions for confidentially submitting the nomination online. Nominators answer a series of questions and enter comments about the applicant. Applicants must start their application in order to initiate the nomination process but they are not permitted to actually submit their completed application until the nominator has submitted the nomination. Thus, teacher/counselor nominations are due by January 11, 2016 (allowing enough time for students to then submit their applications by the Jan. 13 deadline). Click here for more details about the nomination process. INTERVIEWS: Applicants will be contacted via email if they are invited to interview. We will interview only those applicants being considered for the full spectrum of award amounts ($2,000, $5,000, and $10,000). Interviews will be conducted from late February through mid-April. Students invited to interview are not guaranteed a scholarship in any amount. Students not invited to interview may still be under consideration for a $2,000 scholarship. lots of things to get you up to speed

Okay – lots of things to let you know about on this wintry afternoon.

1.       It being nearly next year, please remind your seniors that both they and their parents must get an FSA (Financial Student Aid) ID set up by the end of the year – if they are planning to file their FAFSA on Jan. 1. https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm.

2.       When the shopping and gifting have passed, remind students it’s the perfect time to apply for scholarships. There have been several in Tiger Times. A few new ones have come in and will be in the Tiger Times this coming Monday, December 14.

We have info now from the American Legion for $1,000, due March 1. I’ll get it copied and posted Monday; also the Schweiger Memorial Scholarship for those going into construction or related fields.`

If you have a JUNIOR with strong leadership abilities, consider informing him/her about the all-expenses-paid scholarship to the Bezos Scholars Program at the Aspen Institute from June 25-July 1. Deadline is February 15.

3.       I just found a nifty resource on the OSAC website: Rating Instructions that are given to readers sitting on scholarship committees. Great intel to share with students before they do the OSAC application. 4.       Our FAFSA Help Night from 6-7:30 p.m. January 6 is now being considered a College Goal Oregon site, meaning students from near and far may attend. Our wonderful rep from Chemeketa, Julianna Pilafian, will be helping us. Might any of you be available to lend a hand? I promise good treats! 5.       Chemeketa Scholars info session is at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 11 in Salem and Jan. 12 at the McMinnville campus. Eligible students will be sent a postcard about attending.

6.       Jan. 13 is the deadline for the $2,000-$10,000 Kaiser Scholarship, which is even easier to complete this year. 8.       Some housekeeping notes: The state fire marshal is expected this week or next. He/she takes issue with non-commercial microwaves, so I have stashed ours away in the tall cupboard by the sink. Feel free to pull out and use if desperate for a cup of tea or coffee. Just be sure to put it back in hiding. I’ve also stashed the little heater in the file cabinet behind my desk – in case you happen to be here and it’s nippy.

Kids have begun  receiving letters of acceptance at colleges; hence a brand new “We Got In!!” poster-size, add-your-name list is on the front bulletin board right under the Notre Dame banner – just waiting for names! Please encourage your students to sign up and list ALL colleges they’re being accepted at. They do get a little thrill out of this tradition!   

9.       Now for the last of the scintillating news: The Willamette Promise folks are organizing a major career and college day to be held at YC all day on Feb. 19. At least five or six other schools will be attending as well as our kids. I’ve attached a PDF that provides an overview of the day. Gervais (I think) had one a few months ago, and it was wildly successful. Organizations and companies such as Pepe, John Deere – and their big equipment are expected.

There will be no regular classes that day at YC as it will be all hands on deck to help with the event. It would be so great to have the mentors helping, too – from chaperoning on a trip to a college, to helping presenters to directing student “traffic.” Please think about helping, and let me know. You’re not expected to be here all day (unless you go to a college) – but a few hours would really help.

Overview Dear Janet, Chemeketa Community College offers a full tuition scholarship for up to two years to any graduating high school student residing in our district who has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better (as of first semester/quarter grades of final year in high school) and achieves the required minimum placement test scores. Home-schooled students are also eligible with qualifying SAT or ACT scores.  Information sessions Chemeketa is hosting two information sessions for interested students and their families. Willamette University / Birl Schultz Scholarship

Willamette University will be offering the Birl Schultz Scholarship to one YC student this year. It covers full tuition for four years. There will be a reception on December 6  in Carlton for any interested students. I have attached a flyer with more information. Please feel free to pass this info along to any senior that you think might be a good fit.

Oregon Promise

Here’s the Oregon Promise flyer to share with students and staff. The Oregon Promise application is now open on the OSAC website and will be available until March 1, 2016.

After students have completed the application, they aren’t done!

·         They still need to submit their 7^th semester transcript to OSAC
·         And, they need to file the 2016-2017 FAFSA when it becomes available in January 2016. 
·         Students who cannot file the FASFA should complete the Oregon State Aid Application (ORSAA – the state’s approved alternate application) which will be available on the OSAC website in January 2016.   

Please remember that these funds will NOT be awarded on a first come – first serve basis.
