lots of things to get you up to speed

Okay – lots of things to let you know about on this wintry afternoon.

1.       It being nearly next year, please remind your seniors that both they and their parents must get an FSA (Financial Student Aid) ID set up by the end of the year – if they are planning to file their FAFSA on Jan. 1. https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm.

2.       When the shopping and gifting have passed, remind students it’s the perfect time to apply for scholarships. There have been several in Tiger Times. A few new ones have come in and will be in the Tiger Times this coming Monday, December 14.

We have info now from the American Legion for $1,000, due March 1. I’ll get it copied and posted Monday; also the Schweiger Memorial Scholarship for those going into construction or related fields.`

If you have a JUNIOR with strong leadership abilities, consider informing him/her about the all-expenses-paid scholarship to the Bezos Scholars Program at the Aspen Institute from June 25-July 1. Deadline is February 15.

Also a good time to complete their Oregon Promise application. http://www.oregonstudentaid.gov/oregon-promise.aspx

3.       I just found a nifty resource on the OSAC website: Rating Instructions that are given to readers sitting on scholarship committees. Great intel to share with students before they do the OSAC application. The entire handbook is at this link – look at pages 22, 35-38. http://www.oregonstudentaid.gov/donate-doc/OSACScholarshipHandbook.pdf. I’ll make some copies for the office.

4.       Our FAFSA Help Night from 6-7:30 p.m. January 6 is now being considered a College Goal Oregon site, meaning students from near and far may attend. Our wonderful rep from Chemeketa, Julianna Pilafian, will be helping us. Might any of you be available to lend a hand? I promise good treats! Learn more at http://www.collegegoaloregon.org/locations.html

5.       Chemeketa Scholars info session is at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 11 in Salem and Jan. 12 at the McMinnville campus. Eligible students will be sent a postcard about attending.

6.       Jan. 13 is the deadline for the $2,000-$10,000 Kaiser Scholarship, which is even easier to complete this year. Please let your health-career students know that  they can see informative presentations at these links:  http://share.kaiserpermanente.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/NW-KP-Scholarship-Presentation.pdf http://share.kaiserpermanente.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/NW-Health-Care-Careers-Exploration.pdf. And the application link is here: kp.org/communitybenefit/scholarship/nw

7.        If you have students interested in engineering or architecture, you must check out the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hugely helpful website: These engineer types have it together! There are lists of industry scholarships as well as all kinds of info about being an engineer. For example:
•              Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Education and Research Foundation
•              Advanced American Construction – Schweiger Memorial Scholarship
•              Architecture, Construction & Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program
•              American Association of Cost Engineers International
•              American Public Works Association – Oregon Chapter
•              American Society of Civil Engineers
•              American Society of Professional Estimators
•              American Waterworks Association – Pacific Northwest Section
•              Architecture, Construction & Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program
•              Architecture Foundation of Oregon
•              Asphalt Pavement Association of Oregon
•              Association of State Dam Safety Officials
•              Construction Financial Management Association – Portland
•              Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland
•              National Association of Women in Construction
•              National Association of Women in Construction – Eugene
•              Oregon Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association
•              Pacific NW Region of Carpenters
•              Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon
•              Structural Engineers Association of Oregon
•              Union Plus Scholarship Program
•              Wire Reinforcement Institute

8.       Some housekeeping notes: The state fire marshal is expected this week or next. He/she takes issue with non-commercial microwaves, so I have stashed ours away in the tall cupboard by the sink. Feel free to pull out and use if desperate for a cup of tea or coffee. Just be sure to put it back in hiding. I’ve also stashed the little heater in the file cabinet behind my desk – in case you happen to be here and it’s nippy.

Kids have begun  receiving letters of acceptance at colleges; hence a brand new “We Got In!!” poster-size, add-your-name list is on the front bulletin board right under the Notre Dame banner – just waiting for names! Please encourage your students to sign up and list ALL colleges they’re being accepted at. They do get a little thrill out of this tradition!

9.       Now for the last of the scintillating news: The Willamette Promise folks are organizing a major career and college day to be held at YC all day on Feb. 19. At least five or six other schools will be attending as well as our kids. I’ve attached a PDF that provides an overview of the day. Gervais (I think) had one a few months ago, and it was wildly successful. Organizations and companies such as Pepe, John Deere – and their big equipment are expected.

There will be no regular classes that day at YC as it will be all hands on deck to help with the event. It would be so great to have the mentors helping, too – from chaperoning on a trip to a college, to helping presenters to directing student “traffic.” Please think about helping, and let me know. You’re not expected to be here all day (unless you go to a college) – but a few hours would really help.

OSAC Scholarship Application Changes this year

The OSAC scholarship application is scheduled to go live on Nov. 1. (That being a Sunday, I’m guessing that actually means Monday, Nov.2.) The early-bird deadline will be Feb. 15, 2016, and the final deadline, March 1.

Because of the change noted in red below, we REALLY need to push students to sign up EARLY for their transcripts to be sent to OSAC by the counseling office. Students should begin requesting their transcripts be sent AS SOON as grades have been determined for this term in mid-February. They’ll find a sign-up clipboard in the counseling office.

·         The scholarship matching function has been improved. Membership and employer scholarships have their own section, so the matches are specific to the applicant.

·         Tabs have been created to identify:
o   Scholarships selected by applicant.
o   All membership and employer scholarships.
o   Applicant’s possible matches based on questions they answered.
o   All scholarship list.

·         Applicants will have access to their prior year Personal Statements and Activity Chart; however it is essential these be updated each year to avoid being discarded by selection committees.

·         These sections are open year-round, allowing changes to be made to a previously submitted online application:
o   Contact information
o   College choice
o   Major

·         Applicants CANNOT submit their scholarship application until their transcript has been submitted. The transcript section of the application will be locked as soon as the application is in review status or after the March 1 deadline, whichever comes first.

Applicants who have submitted an invalid transcript will be allowed to upload a corrected version through March 31.

REMINDERS / NOTES

REMINDERS / NOTES
  • In an effort to keep better track of the # of students who drop in to the ASPIRE office (This includes ASPIRE students who stop in between appointments, too.), I made a pink sign-in form and put it on the front table. PLEASE remind students who happen to visit, no matter the reason, to sign the pink form. Thanks!
  • Please use the new, blue Volunteer Checklist form to be sure you're taking advantage of the many ASPIRE resources designed to help you help the kids.
  • GOOD BIG NEWS: The Birl Orion Shultz Memorial Scholarship for four years at Willamette will be available to a senior graduating YC in June. Spread the word!
  • It's hard to believe November is nearly here. With that comes early admission deadlines and scholarship priority deadlines at many colleges. Please be sure to discuss this with any mentees who are considering attending four-year colleges. I think everyone has had at least a few meetings with  their students by now. Please let me know if that's not the case, and we'll formulate a plan B to get them seen next week.
  • Jennifer Knight, the financial aid guru from Linfield spoke at the Beyond YC event Wednesday. She was a wealth of knowlege as always. I'll leave copies of her power point presentation on the front table if you want to grab one.
  • For some reason, this year there has been considerably more student interest in private for-profit schools. Let's remember that three of these, Heald, Carrington and Anthem, went belly up last year. I printed out the current list of the for-profit and non-profit institutions in Oregon that have been approved by OSAC. I'll post it on the white board at the front of the room.
  • We learned new things in preparing for the Jump Start field trip this year. The most important: When students on IEPs want to take placement tests at a community college, make sure they talk with the school's Disabilities Office first. Doing so ahead of time can ensure that a student's accommodations are in place when he or she takes the tests. I've heard random comments lately that students with modified diplomas are unable to go to community college. That is so NOT TRUE. Please squelch this belief if and when you hear it said.
  • If a student taking the placement tests is under 18, there is a handwritten underage admission application (that requires a parent's signature) must be submitted to Chemeketa first.
  • Another note for anyone taking the placement tests: Practice beforehand and see a marked increase in your scores, which generally means the need to take fewer bridge, or remedial, classes. Oregon community colleges of either the Compass test by CollegeBoard or the AccuTest by ACT. I have printed out the practice questions for each and will post them on the front whiteboard. Students can do the practice questions on line.
  • YC ASPIRE has applied to be a  FAFSA+ school. If we're accepted, this will mean FAFSA will share with us the names of students who have submitted FAFSA's along with  whose were incomplete or have been marked for verification. The schools that piloted this program last year had up to a 40% increase in the # of successfully submitted FAFSAs.
  • We have been accepted as one of the few ASPIRE sites to have a hybrid mentoring program -- meaning we will add e-mentoring to our traditional manner of mentoring. I hope to be trained in the "E" part next month.
  • If you're a reader, take advantage of the Ford Family Foundation's free book program at http://www.tfff.org.
  • One of the many things I learned at the ASPIRE conference (and I may be the only one who didn't realize this) was:  you don't have to be a college grad to be in AmeriCorps. A high school grad can join and do service learning while being paid with funds they can bank to help cover college costs down the road.
  • With the Shake Out Day (be prepared for the big earthquake predicted to hit soon) event last week came a renewed campaign for all of us to have emergency kits ready to go. I posted a list of what should be in a kit on the front whiteboard.
  • Please take remember to complete a background check form next time you're in the office.

DATES TO LET THE STUDENTS KNOW ABOUT
  • The nearest College Night Oregon events will be Oct. 27 at Woodburn High School in Woodburn; and Nov. 10 at Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro.
  • So many new programs and materials have been flowing in, I've started placing things for you and interested students to pick up on the tables as you come into the office. This includes the new OSAC  booklets, which arrived yesterday. The OSAC application is expected to go online Nov. 3.
  • YC is having a mini version of College Application Week (not yet sure exactly how the schedule will work for this) the mornings of Nov.  3 and 4. Over the two days, Jen Evans from Pacific will be available to help students with the Common Application. A rep from Portland State will be on-site on Nov. 3, with reps from Corban, Linn Benton Community College and the Northwest College of Construction on hand to help students fill out applications on Nov. 4. It would be great to have more folks on hand to help students with application-related questions. I can't think of any folks better suited for this kind of coaching  than all of you! Please consider giving an assist -- and let me know if you're in.
YC will have another FAFSA help night on Jan. 6, 2016.

This may only apply to math, and potentially the art department. But I thought it was pretty cool that Kahn Academy started using Pixar as a base.

Free help to prep for new PSAT, current and soon-changing SAT

Here are some links to the Khan Academy where students can practice for the new PSAT (to be given next month) as well as the current and revised SAT, which students will begin taking in March 2016. That means this year’s juniors, who take the SAT at the end of this school year, will be taking the new SAT.

IMPORTANT NEWS: Filing FAFSA earlier and more transparency on success of students who receive federal aid

Big news in the College Performance and FAFSA world this weekend.

Here are the links to two Higher Ed articles that explain the things you’ve probably heard, or will hear, on the news.

·         In 2016, students will be able to submit the FAFSA for 2017-18  in October, using 2015 IRS data. This should allow students to have a good sense of their need based aid 3+ months sooner and using IRS data that is available.

Ultimately, BEGINNING this time next year, we will need  to shift the FAFSA focus (including things like College 101 Night for Seniors and Parents and our FAFSA help night) to fall instead of January. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/09/14/obama-administration-unveils-shifts-fafsa#.VfbomoFANfs.mailto

·         This new data shows publicly, for the first time, the share of a college’s former students who make some progress in paying down their federal loans within the first three years after leaving college. And they provide the first comprehensive look at how much students who receive federal loans and Pell Grants end up earning after they leave a specific college, both in the short term and long term. In spite of their limitations, the new data is likely to add fuel to the growing debate in Washington over ways to hold the nation’s colleges -- which collectively receive roughly $150 billion in federal aid each year -- more accountable for student outcomes. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/09/14/obama-administration-publishes-new-college-earnings-loan-repayment-data#.VfbyD8tkaGc.mailto

·         And here’s news we already know if we have or have had teens in our lives. http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/rulesforengagement/2015/09/_during_adolescence_biological_changes.html?cmp=eml-enl-eu-news2

College Matching

Hi All   Below is a link that has some of the best advice I have read. The title is, In Search of a Match: A guide for helping students make informed decisions. It delivers on its promise to inform decisions!  I would modify some of the recommendations such as applying to reach colleges if minimizing cost is a major consideration but on the whole the information is accurate and appropriate.  The graphics are very good and summarize important information.  As an added benefit it is free and you can share the digital document.

I encourage you to read it through and to share this with students and families.  Share your thoughts with this e mail group when you have finished reading the document.                      Cheers,  George

Some highlights from the Junior Options After High School presentation

Some highlights from the Junior Options After High School presentation last week:

On average, the four-year degree is taking 5.5 years to complete
Average age of community college student is 28
Eastern still wants a minimum GPA of 2.75 – and 60% of courses are taken online not on-site in La Grande
Private for-profit care school ITT now also has a university side
Arizona as the lowest out-of-state tuition
If student is strong in science, encourage them to take ACT
Marylhurst and Warner Pacific provide rates that are more at face-value than inflated
FAFSA now want parent student lived with the most to complete FAFSA; NOT the parent who provides 51% of support to student
Since 1959, twice as many girls as boys have applied for financial aid
College admissions folks are looking at “self-advocating” as a sign of success, ie. a success indicator

COCC Culinary Arts

Central Oregon Community College in Bend has partnered with the Cascade Culinary Institute to offer Associates Degrees in Baking & Pastry Arts and in Culinary Arts plus a certificate program in Sustainable Food Systems. There are materials about the programs in the college resources counter.

How to Read and Evaluate a Financial Aid Award Letter

Below is a link to Edvisors and a really well written and visual presentation on how to evaluate a financial aid award letter.

At a meeting last week a UofO representative said they were going to be sending out award letters this week or next.  Most colleges try to get their award letters sent in late March or early April.  Two year colleges are the exception to getting their award letters out in a timely manner.
